We are opening our pharmacy in the spring. Medicinal herbs make us independent.
We have often forgotten the healing effect these days. Medicinal herbs prepared as tea, bath additives, ointments or tinctures can work real miracles.
Independent of the pharmaceutical industry and drug deliveries
10x plants and medicinal herbs for your garden
3 to 4 plants and medicinal herbs for your balcony
Used for thousands of years - forgotten today
The healing powers of herbs have been known since time immemorial and are as old as humanity itself. Hunters and gatherers used plants for healing as early as the Neolithic Age. References to how plants are used medicinally and cultivated repeatedly appear in Babylonian, ancient Egyptian, Indian and Chinese texts.
In Europe, the effects of medicinal plants were only systematically recorded in the Middle Ages. Monks and nuns cataloged the various plants in the monasteries and grew them in the monastery gardens.

In the Middle Ages, monastery gardens were created as kitchen gardens and have a long tradition. The idea of self-sufficiency was at the forefront. Because many monasteries insisted on their claim to be able to support themselves and live independently of the world.
Exactly what we need. Exactly what we want as stealth preppers. Independent supply of medicinal plants for the family. Does gardening stand out? Can anyone identify your herb garden as a healing garden? We think it's unlikely. The plants must be sown and grown in April. Off to the garden.
Our pharmacy
Which plants are useful for beginners? Now for this year we are planting the following ten medicinal herbs.
Plant | Description | Information |
Chamomile ![]() Matricaria chamomilla | The effects of chamomile are varied. It has antispasmodic, anti-inflammatory, calming, drying, flatulence and wound-healing effects. It can be used as a tea or tincture. Internally, the main area of application for chamomile is usually the gastrointestinal area. But chamomile can also be helpful for most other complaints. Digestive problems
A chamomile tea relieves stomach pain in small children and large adults. If you have an upset stomach, drinking chamomile tea in small sips can work wonders.
Because chamomile not only relieves cramps, but also has an antibacterial effect, which makes life difficult for pathogens that may be ingested with food. Chamomile tea also helps against diarrhea and constipation. You can also drink chamomile tea in small sips to treat stomach ulcers. | Sowing: March to June Flowering: June to September Sow only press lightly, do not cover with soil (light germinators!), keep moist. | Sowing: May Flowering: July to September Chicory is a perennial herb that is suitable as a culinary herb. It prefers barren locations and grows up to 80 cm tall. Light blue to purple flowers appear from July to September. |
Eohinacea ![]() Echinacea purpurea,Echinacea angustifolia,Echinacea pallida | The coneflower has the ability to stimulate the body's immune system. One way it achieves this is by activating the phagocytes in the blood and tissue. It is therefore not surprising that the coneflower is a very popular medicinal plant that is used against susceptibility to infections, for example if you are prone to colds or for slow, chronic infections. It is also often used successfully for wounds that heal poorly. If you grow the red coneflower in your own garden, you can also use the herb as a tea. Or you can make your own tincture from herb or rhizome. To make your own echinacea tincture, pour echinacea roots or herb in a screw-top jar with double grain or wine spirit until all parts of the plant are covered and let the mixture steep for 2 to 6 weeks. Then strain and pour into a dark bottle. Take 10-50 drops of this tincture one to three times a day. If the tincture is too concentrated, you can dilute it with water. | Sowing: April to July Flowering: July to September Medicinal plant and traditional ornamental perennial with pink-red flowers on stems approx. 100 cm high. The undemanding long-flowering herb can be easily combined with other perennials. |
Yarrow ![]() Achillea millefolium | Yarrow can be used as a tea or tincture. Particularly noteworthy is the ability of yarrow to promote the return of blood to the heart in the veins. This improves circulation and has a positive effect on venous problems such as varicose veins, swollen feet, circulatory problems in the heart and intermittent claudication. Yarrow can be used externally as baths, washings or compresses. In full baths, yarrow tea is suitable for treating neuralgia, for example. External use is also suitable for ulcers, poorly healing wounds and psoriasis. Traditionally, yarrow was used for injuries caused by iron, such as cuts from knives. | Sowing: April to June Flowering: July to September April-June Sow outdoors in the seedbed, prick out once and plant outside, or sow immediately outside in rows and separate. The plants are harvested during flowering. Avoid cutting the plant parts too deeply. |
California Poppy ![]() Eschscholzia californica | The California poppy is considered to be anti-inflammatory and calming. However, its effectiveness is much more extensive. This is a real superfood. The medicinal plant is also said to have the following properties:

To make marigold tea, pour boiling water over a heaped teaspoon of marigold flowers and let it steep for five to ten minutes. Drink three cups of this daily if you have severe symptoms. Marigold tea strengthens the digestive organs, relieves nausea and helps heal stomach ulcers. Marigold also has a slight laxative effect. In addition, the liver and gallbladder are strengthened. Marigold tea or tincture can help against headaches and difficulty falling asleep. Attacks of dizziness are alleviated. You can also use marigold against panic attacks. Marigold has several effects in gynecology. Thanks to its antispasmodic properties, marigold can relieve period cramps. The main area of use of marigold is external use. It promotes the formation of granulations when new skin grows. It also has a decongestant, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and anti-fungal effect. Calendula tea can be used as a compress, for ablutions and as a bath. You can also make rubs and compresses with diluted marigold tincture. In addition to all these creams, marigold butter is also traditionally popular, which consists of crushed marigold leaves mixed in equal parts with goat butter. It is used in the same way as marigold ointments. | Sowing: March to June Flowering: June to October Undemanding, proven medicinal plant that sometimes sows itself. Marigold repels both nematodes and snails and is suitable as green manure. Marigolds are a must for every vegetable, herb and cottage garden. |
Marchmallow ![]() Althea officinalis | The most important property of the marshmallow is its richness in mucilage, especially from the root. Therefore, they can be used anywhere where an enveloping, protective effect is desired. The marshmallow primarily helps against respiratory diseases and against inflammation and irritation of the digestive organs. To ensure that the mucilage of the marshmallow root is well preserved, marshmallow tea is prepared as a cold extract. To do this, pour 3 teaspoons of cut marshmallow root with a cup of cold water and let the mixture steep for at least eight hours (overnight is also possible). Then strain the tea and warm it slightly to drinking temperature. Tea made from the flowers and leaves of the marshmallow is also made cold. However, you only need one to two teaspoons of these per cup. Drink one to three cups of marshmallow tea daily. You can also use it to rinse and gargle against inflammation in the mouth. Marshmallow tea can also be used externally in the form of washes, baths or compresses. It helps against minor burns, cracked skin and moist eczema. The marshmallow is also suitable for use in the kitchen. In the past, marshmallows were made from the stems, leaves and root of the marshmallow. The cooked root is nutritious but bland. In times of need, marshmallow root used to be boiled. Salad can be made from leaves and flowers. | Sowing: January to March Flowering: May to September Perennial mallow plant, ancient medicinal plant. Silver-grey leaves and white flowers with a dark background make the marshmallow an attractive perennial in the garden bed. Woody shrub. Edible whole, all parts with medical indication from cough/hotness to stomach/intestinal. Rich in mucilage. Sunny location, dry to slightly moist, also lean. Hardy. Sow directly into the bed from March/April. |
Sage ![]() Matricaria chamomilla | Its specialty is the astringent and disinfecting effect. This makes it effective for sore throats and is the plant of choice for all types of sore throats. Sage also has a pronounced antiperspirant effect. If you look more closely, sage has such a wide range of healing effects that it can rightly be described as almost a panacea. You can drink sage as a tea for all kinds of sore throats. It also helps against coughs, laryngitis and other cold symptoms. You can also drink sage tea in cases of whooping cough and smoker's cough. It strengthens the function of the lungs. Sage tea also helps with digestion, strengthens the stomach and stimulates digestive activity. It promotes metabolism and also helps to lose excess weight. If you sweat too much, sage tea inhibits sweat formation. This ability can be used, for example, during puberty or during menopause, when hormonal changes make you prone to hot flashes and sweating attacks. You can also relieve night sweats with sage tea. Sage can be used externally as a wash, for rinses and for baths. In this form it helps against poorly healing wounds, eczema and ulcers. The effect of insect bites can be reduced. The tendency to sweat can also be slowed down with sage washes or baths, for example when feet sweat. To combat inflammation of the oral mucosa and gum inflammation, you can rinse your mouth with sage tea. | Sowing: May to June Flowering: July to November Perennial, strongly branched subshrub with velvety, hairy leaves and an aromatic, slightly bitter taste. Also attractive as an ornamental plant, height 30 - 60 cm. The leaves, fresh or dried, are used to flavor soups, meat, beans, and vegetable dishes, and dried leaves are used for tea. |
Evening Primrose ![]() Oenothera biennis | Only recently has evening primrose been discovered as a versatile remedy, because until a few years ago it was not known that the seeds contain a lot of gamma-linolenic acid, which is good for blood vessels and skin. The leaves can be used internally as a tea or externally as a compress. When eaten as a vegetable, the root is said to give special strength and give sick people new strength and contribute to their recovery. However, evening primrose oil from the seeds has received particular attention because it contains more gamma-linolenic acid than any other known plant. | Sowing: April to May Flowering: July to September The evening primrose is a perennial for planting in borders. The bright yellow cup flowers form bright spots all summer long. The evening primrose is also used to extract the oil of the same name. The planting distance is between 30-50 cm. |
Feverfew ![]() Tanacetum Parthenium, Chrysanthemum Parthenium, Matricaria odorata, Matricaria Parthenium, Pyrethrum Parthenium | Feverfew, whose flowers are reminiscent of chamomile, is almost unknown today. The former medicinal and ornamental plant has largely disappeared from well-kept gardens and ekes out an existence as a wild weed. Feverfew was already highly regarded in ancient times and in the Middle Ages. Feverfew has already been used for headaches in the past. However, in the 70s of the last century it was found that feverfew can effectively help against migraines. However, feverfew does not help so much against acute migraine attacks, but especially if you take it regularly as a preventive measure. Either as a tea, tincture or you can chew one to four fresh leaves every day. Danger! For some people, the fresh leaves cause a burning sensation in the mouth. In this case, it is better to use the feverfew dried as a tea. Feverfew is a good medicinal herb for colds and fever. It makes breathing easier for asthma and coughs. You can sweeten the feverfew tea with honey and drink it in small sips. To combat the consequences of insect bites, feverfew tincture can be applied to the site of the bite. If you dilute the tincture with water and rub it all over your body, it will drive away annoying insects. You can try to combat lice with a concentrated feverfew extract in hot, soapy water (let it cool before use) if you don't have any other lice remedies available. The application must be repeated several times and requires follow-up control. Whether it works depends on whether the lice in question are sensitive or robust. Feverfew tea as a wash or compress helps against purulent wounds. A foot bath with feverfew tea diluted with water helps against swollen feet. | Sowing: April to May Flowering: June to September Well-known perennial with white ray and yellow tubular flowers for borders and rock gardens. Prefers a well-drained, sandy-loamy soil and is a widely used bee pasture and nectar plant. Also suitable for cutting. Externally, feverfew has similarities with chamomile. |
